CRANDIC's new locomotives
Beginning in 2013, CRANDIC transitioned to an all new fleet to improve operating efficiency, crew comfort and safety.
CRANDIC played a major role in the design of the new locomotives. The innovative 1500 XD (extreme duty) model is customized for weight, ballast and tractive control and has the distinction of being the first of its kind in the railroading world. The locomotives were built from the ground up and have dozens of upgrades that make them ideal for CRANDIC's switching-based style of operations.
The locomotives are paired with slugs to improve traction. Though still primarily gold in color, observers will notice a new paint design. The bold contemporary look coincides with the cutting-edge upgrades featured on the pair. Specifically, the locomotive’s generator has twice the electrical output of the previous DC fleet to improve pulling power at lower throttle speeds.
On the safety front, the locomotives are outfitted with larger windows and an on-board camera to improve line of sight. Input from CRANDIC train crews throughout the design and manufacturing process created a spacious and comfortable work environment. Features include ergonomic seats, foot rests and other conveniences.
The investment positions CRANDIC to serve new industries that locate in the greater Cedar Rapids corridor.
